The pre season friendly this Saturday at Macie Park at 3pm will be a curtain raiser to a toast and roast of ex Scottish and WA State football legend Ernie Hannigan.
Ernie has given great service to many clubs in WA including,Stirling City, Stirling Macies, Morley Windmills, Spearwood Dallies, Galeb and Yugal. The board at Macies along with some of the ex Presidents felt it time to give Ernie a big pat on the back for his amazing service to football in WA and particularly for the great job he did in getting the Macies up into the big league way back in 79, 80, 81.
A glimpse of Ernie's brilliant career(from wikepedia, an interesting read) :
Ernest 'Ernie' Hannigan (born 23 January 1943) is a Scottish former footballer. Hannigan was a fast, tricky, right winger. He is perhaps best known for his games at 3 clubs and the partnership he forged with Scotland international centre forward Neil Martin at 2 of them; 147 games at Queen of the South and 47 at Coventry City (he played with Martin at both) and also for 98 games in between at Preston North End. He also had stints with, Torquay United, Morton, New York Cosmos, New Jersey Brewers and Raith Rovers........a true football journeyman who plied his trade across the world.
Special guests for the roast which kicks off at 5pm in the Macie Park clubhouse will include, old friends Barry Greenwood, Bill Murray, Paul Tombides, ex WA News soccer journo David Andrews, Micky Lyons, Syd Amphlett, several Glory players and the many friends Ernie made on the park.........too many to mention in this promo.
Full bar and canteen facilities will be open and an old fashioned Macie's feast awaits the guests and roasters.......pig and lambs on spit.
Entry is free but a Princess Margaret Foundation tin will be walked through the crowd for gold coin donations that can help the kids in some small way.
Ernie and the organisers want to make it perfectly clear....he is neither dead nor dying, in fact in great health and happiness with his life and felt honoured by the tribute. We believe in honouring our past legends while they are with us and can appreciate all those who appreciated the great contribution made to our game in WA.
The 18's will kick off at 11am, the Resies at 1pm and the league at 3pm. The Lions will unvail the 2 new Irish signings in ex Shamrock Rovers captain Shane Robinson and ex St Patrick Athletic centre back Jason Gavin......two quality players, who will play a big part in the Lions hopes of bringing back the glory days to Macie Park.
Everyone is welcome to what promises to be a great day of football and celebration, see you there.
Regards
